American bison won't take any nonsense from anyone or anything. Especially those things with sharp teeth XD

While it looks like a rather humiliating moment for the wolf (and may possibly be), this is usually what happens. In fact, it is an instinctive strategy employed by wolves when hunting large, stubborn animals such as bison.
The gray wolf will not attack a large ungulate if it is too close to others; they will always attempt to seperate it from the herd or attack an animal that is already alone. Usually, North American gray wolves go after elk, deer, or caribou, in which case they can simply run toward the herd and find the easiest target within a matter of seconds.

Bison, however, will not run so easily and need coaxing. The wolves will tag-team the herd and encourage the bison to chase them to find the weakest animal or seperate an individual from the herd.

Even with such strategies, it is estimated that gray wolves have a hunting success rate of only 10%.

It should also note that wolves don't always kill their prey before dinnertime...

No animals were harmed in the making of this photo. This was taken in a controlled, captive environment during a regular wolf-bison demonstration at Wolf Park. All animals are closely monitored during the presentation and are carefully checked for injuries and good health both before it begins and after it has ended.

The only thing I've ever seen get injured in all of the demonstrations I have attended was a single stray cat that was in the wrong place at the wrong time. At least the wolves were happy about it 0_o

I am putting together a presentation for a master's degree thesis project, and would love to use this image. Do you have a high resolution file that you'd be willing to send to me? I'd of course give you credit!
